First, let’s define the dark web...

The dark web is a part of the Internet. Unlike the Surface Web we are familiar with, the dark web is not indexed directly through traditional search engines such as Google and Bing. To access the dark web, users need to hide their identity and location through specific software or settings. The most commonly used tool is Tor (The Onion Router). Tor Browser allows users to access dark web sites while remaining anonymous.

The difference between dark web and deep web

Another concept often mentioned with the dark web is the "Deep Web", which refers to web pages that are not indexed by search engines. These contents include emails, online banking, private databases, etc.
In contrast, the dark web is a subset of the deep web in which specific websites are deliberately hidden and can only be accessed through special tools or settings.
The deep web consists of unindexed websites that are locked away with usernames and passwords and contain sensitive material such as legal documents and financial records. Although most of the content and data on the deep web are harmless, it contains important data that companies need to proactively protect, and it is an environment that needs to be prioritized for prevention.
However, the real danger lies on the dark web. Only through special browsers, such as Tor, these browsers provide a high degree of anonymity, making the dark web a hotspot for criminal activity. This anonymity attracts cyber criminals to conduct data exfiltration, fraud, money laundering and selling stolen data.
