##穿梭於秘密通道：揭秘那些深藏在 VPN 的漏洞

- **演講簡介**：

Named Pipe 從 Windows 早期以來一直是作業系統的重要元件，它提供了 Inter-Process Communication (IPC) 機制讓 Process 之間進行溝通。Named Pipe 讓同一台機器或網域內的系統的 Process 以 Client-Server 模式互相傳遞資訊。其中一個關鍵功能是 Impersonation，Server 端可以暫時使用 Client 的 Security Context，從而使其能夠以 Client 的權限執行操作。

在這個研究中，我做了一個用於分析 Named Pipe 的工具。結合了 Minifilter 驅動程式和透過 DLL Injection 實作 Ring3 Hook 來監控和攔截 Named Pipe 的資訊。Minifilter 驅動程式用來監控檔案系統的操作，而 Ring3 Hook 攔截與 Named Pipe 相關的 API。利用這工具我在 Windscribe、CyberGhost 和 OpenVPN 中發現了許多 Named Pipe 相關的漏洞。具體來說，Windscribe 的漏洞可以讓攻擊者達到 Elevation of Privilege (EoP) (CVE-2024-6141) 和 Broken Access Control (BAC)；CyberGhost 的漏洞則可被利用達到 BAC；而在 OpenVPN 中，漏洞會導致 EoP (CVE-2024-4877)。其中 EoP 的漏洞會讓攻擊者獲得更高的權限，而 BAC 會導致低權限的使用者可以訪問敏感資源。

在參加這個議程後，聽眾將更深入地了解 Named Pipe 相關的資安議題。議程將包含分析工具的實作原理、漏洞的影響範圍。聽眾將得知該如何實作更安全的 Named Pipe，在意識到 IPC 機制重要性的同時，也了解開發者可能常犯的錯誤與怎麼避免類似情況發生。




##Sailing the Seven SEAs: Deep Dive into Polaris’ Arsenal and Intelligence Insights

Since the 2010s, Polaris (also known as Mustang Panda, Earth Preta, or Twill Typhoon) has maintained a persistent presence in various East Asian countries, including Vietnam, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, Taiwan, and more. In late 2021, we discovered a new malware family that we had dubbed NoFive, characterized by its shellcode form and rudimentary features. Since then, we have observed an increasing number of backdoors utilizing NoFive as a base template. Although these malware variants initially seem disorganized, our telemetry and analysis indicate that Polaris strategically deploys them based on specific target countries and sectors. This presentation aims to provide deeper insights into Polaris' malware development strategies and deployment patterns through our comprehensive threat intelligence. 

In this talk, we will provide a detailed technical analysis of the relationships among these various malware families, including NoFive, TOnePipeShell, QReverse, and others. We will examine how the developer(s) of these backdoors have been gradually modifying them by changing the traffic encoding/decoding mechanisms, continually shifting the features included within the backdoors, adding USB lateral movement abilities and more. Additionally, we will share our observations of Polaris’ recent activities and discuss our expectations for future developments.

##Shuttling Through Secret Pipes: Unveiling Vulnerabilities in Leading VPNs
- **Speaker**: Zeze / Research Engineer
- **Intro**:

Named pipes have been an integral part of Windows operating systems since the early days of Windows NT, offering a robust mechanism for inter-process communication (IPC). They allow processes to communicate on the same machine or across networked systems using a client-server model. A key feature is impersonation, where a server temporarily adopts the security context of a client, enabling it to perform actions with the client's permission.

In my research, I developed a tool to analyze named pipe security. This tool combines a minifilter driver and a ring3 hook via DLL injection to monitor and intercept named pipe communications. The minifilter driver operates at a low level within the file system, while the ring3 hook intercepts user mode API calls related to named pipes. Using this tool, I identified vulnerabilities in named pipe implementations in software from Windscribe, CyberGhost, and OpenVPN. Specifically, vulnerabilities in Windscribe allow an attacker to achieve both Elevation of Privilege (EoP) (CVE-2024-6141) and Broken Access Control (BAC). In CyberGhost, vulnerabilities can be exploited to achieve BAC, and in OpenVPN, they can lead to EoP (CVE-2024-4877). These vulnerabilities present significant security risks, as EoP can allow attackers to gain higher privileges, and BAC can enable unauthorized access to sensitive resources.

By attending this talk, the audience will gain a deeper understanding of named pipes, their functionality, and associated security implications. The presentation will cover the methodology behind the analysis tool, the specific vulnerabilities discovered, and their potential impacts. Attendees will learn about named pipe security intricacies, common pitfalls, and mitigation strategies. This talk aims to equip security professionals and software developers with the knowledge to better secure their applications against similar threats, emphasizing vigilant security practices for IPC mechanisms.

We have released the corresponding patch update file as follows, please update it immediately.

- **Recommended Solution**：
 - For on-premises customers, please look at the links in the security update notice for the patch.
 - For cloud version customers, the patch has already been applied on 2024/07/12.

- Introduction:

China-nexus actors have compromised edge devices such as firewall, VPN, IoT devices, etc. against Taiwan Government since 2020 during COVID19, and have compromised those devices to build Botnet, spread disinformation, and exfiltrate sensitive data. However, edge devices belong to closed embedded platforms, and installing antivirus/EDR on those platforms and extracting malware are difficult. Moreover, some models have already reached end-of-life, so no patches are available. Worst of all, Chinese APT has owned the capabilities to find and exploit 0-day on edge devices such as Sophos Firewall, Array SSL VPN, and Barracuda Email Security Gatwall, etc.

Consequently, the presentation will reveal a surveillance router exploited in the wild by Chinese APT groups and will share multiple case studies of edge devices abused by Chinese threat actors such as spread disinformation, Botnet implanted, data exfiltration, and compromised C2. In addition, we also disclose the special and new malware family implanted in edge devices, such as port-knocking backdoors and living-of-the-land binary(LoLbin) attacks in edge devices. Lastly, this presentation also provides related approaches to mitigate attacks of edge devices.

The files belong to i-Soon, a Shanghai-based company, and give a rare glimpse into the secretive world of the industry that supports China’s state-backed hacking. The leak includes details of Chinese hacking operations, lists of victims and potential targets, and the day-to-day complaints of i-Soon staff.

“These leaked documents support TeamT5’s long-standing analysis: China's private cybersecurity sector is pivotal in supporting China’s APT attacks globally,” Che Chang, a cyber threat analyst at the Taiwan-based cybersecurity firm TeamT5, tells WIRED. Chang says the company has been tracking i-Soon since 2020 and found that it has a close relationship with Chengdu 404, a company linked to China’s state-backed hackers.

【日本セキュリティアナリストカンファレンス JSAC2024】振り返り

Japan Security Analyst Conference 2024(JSAC2024) is held on Jan. 25-26 with virtual & onsite talks. This annual cyber security conference hosted by JPCERT/CC, aimed to bring together security analysts and provide opportunities for them to share technical knowledge related to incident response and analysis. 

This year, TeamT5 had one session during the event. Our CTI Researcher Yi-Chin Chuang and Yu-Tung Chang gave a speech on “Unveiling TeleBoyi: Chinese APT Group Targeting Critical Infrastructure Worldwide ''.

The speech introduces TeleBoyi, a Chinese-nexus APT that has not been disclosed previously. Based on our research findings, TeleBoyi shows a strong preference for targeting critical infrastructure, with a particular focus on the telecommunication sectors. The group has been active since at least 2014 and is currently still active. Their scope of targeting extends across numerous countries worldwide, including APAC, Americas, and Europe. 

The presentation also covers TeleBoyi’s Tactic Techniques and Procedures (TTPs) including their new weapons such as DoubleShell, TripleZero, and FakeWorker. Moreover, the presentation discusses overlapping TTPs with other notorious APT groups including Amoeba (APT41), DirtyFuxi (Earth Berberoka), and FamousSparrow. As the activities by TeleBoyi have not yet been documented, we believe the techniques and tactics disclosed in this presentation can help blue teams prevent, detect, and respond to Teleboyi's attacks more efficiently and effectively.

Engineers who analyze and respond to them are required to improve their skills to keep up with the ever-changing techniques of cyber attacks. Security analysts are expected to get together and exchange their technical expertise on incident handling to develop their strength against cyber attacks both individually and as a whole.

TeamT5 will have one session during the event. Our CTI Researcher Yi-Chin Chuang and Yu-Tung Chang gave a speech on “Unveiling TeleBoyi: Chinese APT Group Targeting Critical Infrastructure Worldwide ''.

The speech introduces TeleBoyi, a Chinese-nexus APT that has not been disclosed previously. Based on our research findings, TeleBoyi shows a strong preference for targeting critical infrastructure, with a particular focus on the telecommunication sectors. The group has been active since at least 2014 and is currently still active. Their scope of targeting extends across numerous countries worldwide, including APAC, Americas, and Europe. 

The presentation also covers TeleBoyi’s Tactic Techniques and Procedures (TTPs) including their new weapons such as DoubleShell, TripleZero, and FakeWorker. Moreover, the presentation discusses overlapping TTPs with other notorious APT groups including Amoeba (APT41), DirtyFuxi (Earth Berberoka), and FamousSparrow. As the activities by TeleBoyi have not yet been documented, we believe the techniques and tactics disclosed in this presentation can help blue teams prevent, detect, and respond to Teleboyi's attacks more efficiently and effectively.

Cyber attacks occur on a daily basis, and its techniques have been constantly changing. Engineers who analyze and respond to them are required to improve their skills to keep up with the ever-changing techniques of cyber attacks. However, there are few occasions in Japan where techniques and knowledge of incident analysis and response are shared among engineers. Security analysts are expected to get together and exchange their technical expertise on incident handling to develop their strength against cyber attacks both individually and as a whole.

To achieve this goal, JPCERT/CC hosts Japan Security Analyst Conference (JSAC), the annual conference for exchanging technical information on cyber security incident analysis and response. In this conference, security analysts who handle security incidents on a daily basis are encouraged to share information with each other to deal with ever-evolving cyber attacks today and in the future.

日本最大のサイバーセキュリティ国際会議「CODE BLUE 2023」が、11月8日から9日に東京にてリアルイベントで開催されます。TeamT5は台湾本社と日本支社を持っており、このアジアトップの国際サイバーセキュリティイベントに参加できることを光栄に思います。

今年は、弊社のサイバー脅威アナリストとサイバーセキュリティ研究者が「シンボリック実行とテイント解析によるWDMドライバーの脆弱性ハンティングの強化」、「金儲けかカモフラージュか？ APT41によるランサムウェア活動の解析」、「内部からの勝利: 海外のディアスポラ（移住者）をターゲットにした中国の情報作戦」について、最新の研究を発表いたします。

## シンボリック実行とテイント解析によるWDMドライバーの脆弱性ハンティングの強化
- 時間：11月8日 16:25 – 17:05

WDM ドライバーの脆弱性検出は、ドライバーがクローズドソースであること、そしてドライバーをカーネルにロードするには特定の環境でなければならないことから、困難な場合があります。シンボリック実行とテイント解析は、ソフトウェアセキュリティにおいて一般的な手法ですが、プログラムの複雑さに応じて、実行可能なパスと潜在的に汚染された入力（Tainted inputs）が指数関数的に増加する、パスの爆発（Path explosion）とテイントの爆発（Taint explosion）の問題が発生する可能性があります。

本講演では、WDMドライバーの脆弱性を検出するために、シンボリック実行とテイント解析を用いた「 IOCTLance」というソリューションをご紹介いたします。対象の入力バッファを汚染（Tainting）し、パスの爆発問題を緩和するカスタム可能なオプションを開発することで、IOCTLanceはWDMドライバーの様々なタイプの脆弱性を検出することができます。また、26のドライバーで117の未知の脆弱性を発見し、サービス拒否、不十分なアクセス制御、権限昇格の脆弱性を含む41のCVEが特定されました。

## 金儲けかカモフラージュか？ APT41によるランサムウェア活動の解析

APT41は、中国における最も複雑で洗練された国家支援グループの一つであると言っても過言ではありません。2020年の米国による起訴は、APT41の新たな攻撃が阻止、緩和されることがなく、その標的範囲と攻撃手法が拡大し続けていることが確認されています。APT41は、中国のAPTグループでは珍しく、金銭目的のサイバー犯罪を行うことで知られています。特筆すべきは、弊社の研究により、APT41が2019年の早い段階からランサムウェア攻撃に積極的に関与しているということが判明したことです。

本講演では、APT41のランサムウェア攻撃への関与に関する最新の調査結果を発表します。弊社は過去3年間にわたり、アジア、ヨーロッパ、アメリカの11カ国において、10以上の業界でAPT41によるランサムウェアの活動痕跡を発見しました。

また、「APT41 はなぜランサムウェアを運用に導入し始めたのか？偽装のため？金儲けのため？」という質問にも答えていきます。

APT41のスパイ活動とランサムウェア活動を比較したところ、C2と戦術が重複しているにもかかわらず、マルウェアの使用状況と洗練度の点でいくつかの違いがあることがわかりました。特に、技術指標（Technical indicators）からは、APT41 が Hades ランサムウェアギャングに関連している可能性が示唆されています。

APT41が中国当局に代わって活動する民間請負業者のグループであることを考慮すると、APT41 は異なる目的を持つ複数のチームで活動している可能性があり、つまりはランサムウェアの使用目的も異なると考えています。

彼らの最新の活動は、このグループが依然として世界中の組織に重大なリスクをもたらしていることを改めて証明しています。弊社は、脅威インテリジェンスとアトリビューションが、APT41による攻撃が再び仕掛けられる前に、防御するためのより良い戦略を立てることに役立つと考えています。

## 内部からの勝利: 海外のディアスポラ（移住者）をターゲットにした中国の情報作戦

中国とアメリカの政治情勢が激化する中、ソーシャルメディアは依然として中国の脅威アクターが世論に影響を与えるための主な拠点となっています。中国は影響力作戦（IO、情報作戦）において、中国のボットネット、マーケティング会社、海外支社など、様々なリソースを組み合わせていたことが指摘されています。

特に、IOの内容が華僑向けに調整されています。弊社は、中国がディアスポラを活用し、他国民の支持を獲得するために有利なシナリオを考案していると見ています。

講演の前半では、中国のボットネットの最近の進化について解説します。2022年末に汎用AIが高い関心を集める中、中国のボットネットも関連コンテンツを作成する活動にAI技術を採用しました。「OperationWhitePaper」では、中国のボットネットがVTuberのアバターを使用し、中国の厳格な新型コロナウイルス対策に対する2022年の抗議運動である「白紙革命（White Paper Revolution」を批判する動画を共有しました。

後半では、中国のボットネット、マーケティング会社、海外支社の緊密な連携を示す3つの注目すべき活動をご紹介します。はじめに、中国の国家警察が「912プロジェクト」の下、同じボットネットを活用して米国で偽情報キャンペーンを展開している様子を詳しく解説します。次に、英国を拠点とするPR会社に関する独占調査をご紹介します。最後に、台湾での最近の事例について詳しく説明し、脅威アクターがどのようにして現地のPR会社を潜在的に利用し、より関連性の高い内容のIOキャンペーンを実施するのかについて提示します。

## Enhanced Vulnerability Hunting in WDM Drivers with Symbolic Execution and Taint Analysis

Detecting security vulnerabilities in WDM drivers can be difficult due to the closed-source nature of the drivers and the need for a specific environment to load them into the kernel. Symbolic execution and taint analysis are commonly used techniques in software security, but they can suffer from the "path explosion" and "taint explosion" problems, where the number of possible paths and potentially tainted inputs grows exponentially with program complexity.

This talk proposes a solution called IOCTLance, which uses symbolic execution and taint analysis to detect vulnerabilities in WDM drivers. By tainting the target input buffer and developing customizable options to mitigate the path explosion problem, IOCTLance can detect various types of vulnerabilities in WDM drivers. The discovery of 117 previously unknown vulnerabilities in 26 unique drivers led to the identification of 41 CVEs, including denial of service, insufficient access control, and elevation of privilege vulnerabilities.

## Money Making or Camouflaging? Dissecting APT41's Ransomware Activities

It is not an exaggeration to say APT41 is among the most prolific and sophisticated Chinese state-sponsored groups. The US 2020 indictment did not hinder or even slow down APT41 from launching new attacks, as we observe its target scope and arsenal continue to expand. APT41 is also one-of-a-kind, since it has been known to conduct financially motivated cybercrime, which are not common practices among Chinese APT groups. What’s noteworthy is that our research suggests that APT41 has been actively engaged in ransomware attacks as early as 2019.

In this presentation, we will share our latest findings on APT41’s engagement in ransomware attacks. Over the past three years, we have found traces of APT41's ransomware campaign against at least 10 industries across 11 countries in Asia, Europe, and America.

We will also try to answer the question: Why did APT41 start deploying ransomware in their operations? Is it for camouflaging or money making? By comparing APT41's espionage and ransomware campaigns, we found that there were some differences in terms of malware usage and the level of sophistication, despite C2 and tactics overlaps. Notably, technical indicators suggest that APT41 might be connected to the Hades ransomware gang. Given that APT41 is a group of private contractors operating on behalf of the Chinese authorities, we assess that APT41 might be operating with multiple teams with different goals, therefore, the different aims of ransomware usage.

Their latest activities once again prove that the group still poses a significant risk to organizations worldwide. We believe threat intelligence and attribution process can help the defense side to make better strategy before APT41 strikes again.

## Winning from Within: Chinese InfoOp Targeting Overseas Diaspora

With the turbulent political climate between China and the US, social media remains the primary battlefield for Chinese threat actors to influence public opinion. Evidence suggests that China combined different resources, including Chinese botnet, marketing firms, and overseas branches, in the influence operations (IO, or information operation). Notably, the IO content was tailored for the overseas Chinese. We assessed that China leverages its diaspora to further ferment the favorable narratives to win the public within the other countries.

In the first part of the presentation, we will dissect the recent evolution of the Chinese botnet. As generic AI becomes a heated concern at the end of 2022, Chinese botnets also adopted AI technologies in the campaigns to create related content. In "Operation WhitePaper," the Chinese botnet shared videos with VTubers' avatars criticizing the White Paper Revolution – a 2022 protest on Chinese strict covid policy.

In the second part of the presentation, we will introduce three notable campaigns to demonstrate the closer collaboration among the Chinese botnet, marketing firms, and overseas branches. First, we will detail how China's national police forces leverage the same botnet to operate disinformation campaigns in the US under the "912 Project". Then, we will share our exclusive investigation based on the UK-based PR company. Lastly, we will elaborate on a recent case in Taiwan, showing how the threat actors can potentially use local PR firms to conduct IO campaigns with more related content.

The Chinese IO campaigns aligned with its political agenda and often surged with important geopolitical events. In the last part of the talk, we will provide our assessment and the possible threat landscape for the rest of the year. Among all, as Taiwan will host the next presidential election in January 2024, we will provide our predictions on the potential IO campaigns ahead with policy recommendations to mitigate the potential impacts.

## What's New?
New ThreatVision isn't just an upgrade; it's a leap forward in threat intelligence. Some highlights include:

- **Enhanced Features**: We've bolstered the existing capabilities and introduced new, cutting-edge features such as Patch Management Reports(PMR) and Vulnerability Insights Reports(VIR), and Unified Search to help users stay ahead of evolving threats.

- **User-Friendly Interface**: The new platform offers an intuitive interface designed for efficiency and ease of use.

- **API Integration**: API Version 1 will continue to be supported, ensuring uninterrupted service. Users can access the latest technical documentation within the new interface for API-related services.

- **API Version 2**: In response to user demands, we're progressively releasing API functionalities compatible with the new version. This includes API support for IoC packages, such as APT IoC List and Cyber Crime IoC List.

- **Vulnerability Reports**: To support customers in managing vulnerabilities, Vulnerability Reports share technical details about critical vulnerabilities, providing possible attack scenarios and detection tools, published every two weeks, focusing on one critical vulnerability each time.


## Migration Details
As of today, August 30, 2023, we will discontinue the original ThreatVision version (referred to as the "old version"). All active accounts will be automatically logged out and redirected to the new ThreatVision web interface. Users will need to log in to the new interface, which will become their primary portal for threat intelligence. API Version 1 will still be supported.

Cybersecurity investment has been at the forefront of most digitisation. Even with more investment into cybersecurity, cyber threats are still skyrocketing. To provide the latest cyber threat trends, TeamT5 CEO, Sung-ting Tsai, will give a talk with the topic “Evolution of Digital Weapons of Chinese APT”. 

The talk will mention that China has deliberately developed their capability in developing digital weapons, including weaponizing N-days or discovering 0days. Hackers from China have dominated Pwn2Own, a world famous computer hacking contest, for several years before 2017. Their achievements were well recognized. Everything changed in 2018 when Chinese authorities banned their security talents from attending overseas hacking contests. It is believed that China wants to limit these undisclosed vulnerabilities from leaking out of China. In the same year, China held their own Tianfu Cup, a Pwn2Own-like contest. A chain of iPhone exploits won the top prize. But this achievement was turned into a weapon and used in cyber attacks against Uyghur, according to Google research. This story demonstrated how China nationalized their security talent's efforts. 

In this talk, we will walk you through exploits utilized in Chinese APT attacks in the past 5 years and analyze the threat actors leveraged these exploits. We will also discuss how these exploits changed TTPs of Chinese APT and the potential reasons behind these changes.

【Speech】 TeamT5 will be at ST Engineering Cybersecurity Summit (Singapore)

資訊安全工具的部署經費一直是企業關鍵支出之一。 然而，即使企業投入更多資訊安全防禦，資安威脅仍舊是企業營運的重大風險來源。

演講中將提到中國有意發展數位武器的能力，包括將 N-day漏洞武器化或挖掘零日漏洞 (zero day vulnerability)。 在2017年之前，中國黑客連續幾年稱霸世界著名資安駭客大賽 Pwn2Own，他們的成績得到了廣泛認可。

到了 2018年，中國當局禁止他們的資安人才參加海外駭客大賽。 據信，中國希望限制這些未公開的漏洞，外流到中國以外的地方。 同年，中國舉辦了自己的天府杯，一場類似 Pwn2Own的比賽。 比賽中，一系列 iPhone 漏洞運用技巧贏得了最高獎項， 但根據 Google 的研究，這一成果被轉化為武器，並用於針對維吾爾族的網路攻擊。這個故事展示了中國如何將其安全人才的努力國有化。
 
而在本次演講中，我們將帶領聽眾了解過去 5 年中國 APT 攻擊中使用的漏洞，並分析利用這些漏洞的威脅行為者。我們還將討論這些漏洞如何改變中國 APT 的戰術、技巧、流程(TTP) 以及這些變化背後的潛在原因。

##直搗核心：探索 AMD 驅動程式中的資安漏洞

WDM（Windows Driver Model）是一種 Windows 核心驅動程式的類型，利用 DDI（Device Driver Interfaces）的架構彼此傳遞資訊和與硬體溝通。如果驅動程式存在漏洞，攻擊者可能利用它們來提權。此外也可以被濫用來執行惡意程式，也就是所謂的 BYOVD（Bring Your Own Vulnerable Driver）攻擊。

在這個議程我將介紹五個與 AMD 的驅動程式相關的 CVE，分別為 CVE-2023-20556、CVE-2023-20561、CVE-2023-20562、CVE-2023-20560 和 CVE-2023-20564。透過模糊測試和逆向分析，在 AMD μProf 和 AMD Ryzen Master 中找到三個 DoS 與兩個 EoP 漏洞。DoS 是由於沒有驗證由攻擊者控制的輸入，導致可能存取到空指標。另外兩個 EoP 則是由於不足的訪問控制，讓攻擊者能夠寫入任意虛擬記憶體和物理記憶體。

在回報後經過幾個月與 AMD PSIRT 的溝通，已確認取得五個 CVE，並討論漏洞修復的日期。AMD PSIRT 對這些漏洞表現出正向的態度並積極解決問題。

## Unmasking CamoFei: An In-depth Analysis of an Emerging APT Group Focused on Healthcare Sectors in East Asia

The healthcare industry has become increasingly important to a country's overall well-being, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, the healthcare sector has also become a target for cybercriminals and Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) groups. These threat actors were particularly interested in targeting patients' personal information and confidential information such as vaccine development. One such group that has been making such a ruckus is the APT group CamoFei, better known as Chamelgang. In recent years, CamoFei has operated relatively unnoticed for several years. It gained notoriety after PT Security published a report back in September 2021, indicating that the group was specifically targeting Russia. Since then, the threat group has started focusing on Taiwan, performing spear-phishing attacks against multiple organizations whilst carrying large-scale attacks against multiple Taiwanese healthcare and government agencies. During our presentation, we will analyze CamoFei's Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTPs), and the custom malware CamoFei had developed. We will also present several case studies highlighting the attack methods that CamoFei has employed against various healthcare and governmental organizations. By the end of the talk, the healthcare organizations and all the targeted organizations can use our mitigation and detection methods regarding the attacks.

##Uncovering Kernel Exploits: Exploring Vulnerabilities in AMD's Windows Kernel Drivers

- Intro:

WDM (Windows Driver Model) drivers are a specific type of Windows kernel driver that utilizes DDI (Device Driver Interfaces) to facilitate communication between drivers. They are responsible for interacting with hardware components. However, if a kernel driver is vulnerable, it can be exploited by attackers to escalate privileges or execute malicious kernel code, which is commonly known as a BYOVD (Bring Your Own Vulnerable Driver) attack.

In this session, I will present five CVEs related to AMD's Windows kernel drivers, specifically CVE-2023-20556, CVE-2023-20561, CVE-2023-20562, CVE-2023-20560, and CVE-2023-20564. These vulnerabilities were discovered through a combination of fuzzing and manual reverse-engineering techniques. Among them, three are denial of service vulnerabilities, and two are elevation of privilege vulnerabilities found in AMD products, namely AMD μProf and AMD Ryzen Master, which are related to AMD's CPU. The denial of service vulnerabilities are caused by a lack of input buffer validation, controlled by an attacker, leading to null pointer dereference. The other two elevation of privilege vulnerabilities are a result of insufficient access control, allowing an attacker to write into arbitrary virtual and physical memory, respectively.

After months of communication with the AMD PSIRT, the assignment of five CVEs has been confirmed, and the date for public disclosure has been established. AMD PSIRT has displayed a commendable response to these security issues and has actively addressed them.

We had the honor of speaking at the prestigious event organized by the top NAS provider - [Synology](https://www.synology.com/en-us), and it was an incredible experience!

TeamT5 Joined Interop23 to Introduce Intelligence-Driven Cyber Defense Solutions

TeamT5, a leading cybersecurity firm, has recently published a report to share insights and suggestions on how Japan can face cyber attacks during the G7 Summit in Hiroshima, Japan. TeamT5 suggests enterprises/organizations should have comprehensive control over current events and industry attack trends. Strengthening monitoring and staying updated with the latest intelligence is crucial in order to respond to potential attack incidents.

Due to recent world events, prior to the G7 Hiroshima Summit, which was held May 19-21, Japan experienced a surge in cyberattacks, mainly targeting the Cabinet Offices and the local governments of Osaka, Aichi, Kumamoto, and Nara, as well as companies such as West Japan Railway and Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings.

TeamT5 also identified multiple G7-related attacks.One such attack was a spear-phishing campaign against government entities of G20 countries by GuDiao. TeamT5 identified a G7-themed decoy and GuDiao's proprietary downloader, StartIE in the email. Further analysis of the incident suggested that GuDiao exploited CVE-2023-0669 to compromise a server and use the server as the C2 of this campaign.

Sample 1 is a spear-phishing email. In the email, the actor attached a Microsoft Word document with a malicious template embedded with StartIE. The Word document was a decoy with content related to the recent G7 Summit in Hiroshima.

5月19日から21日にかけて開催されたG7広島サミットを前に日本では、昨今の世界情勢により、内閣府や大阪、愛知、熊本、奈良の地方自治体、JR西日本や東京電力ホールディングスなどの企業を中心にサイバー攻撃が急増しました。

また、TeamT5では、G7に関連する複数の攻撃を確認しました。 そのひとつが、GuDiaoによるG20諸国の政府機関に対するスピアフィッシング・キャンペーンでした。 TeamT5は、G7を主題にしたデコイ（おとり）と、GuDiaoが独自に開発したダウンローダー「StartIE」を、電子メール内で確認しました。 インシデントのさらなる分析により、GuDiaoはCVE-2023-0669を悪用してサーバーを侵害し、そのサーバーを今回のキャンペーンのC2として使用したことが示唆されました。

In Black Hat Asia 2023, TeamT5’s threat intelligence researchers Yue-Tien Chen and Zih-Cing Liao (aka DuckLL) warn that APT groups spy on the Taiwan media industry.

Based on analysis,  these China-nexus APT groups are Amoeba(aka APT41, Winnti), Huapi (aka BlackTech, PLEAD), Goushe (aka APT23, KeyBoy), SLIME25 (aka APT24), SLIME50, and SLIME51.

For the reason that APT groups spy on the media, we can identify three main motivations: information collection, political relationships, and information operation. The first and most obvious reason is information collection. Media are excellent sources for collecting unique information. If an APT group comprises a media organization, it can quickly get a lot of valuable information.

Secondly, media organizations often have complex political relationships. Besides obtaining political news, the media is also a good resource for social-engineering attacks. Actors can target politicians through their contact channels.

The third motivation is information operation. Fake news is a significant challenge in the information explosion era. Most people still tend to believe news from credible media. If an APT group  comprises a media organization and spreads false information, this may control public opinion, sow discord, and make politics unstable. 

Based on the purpose of the series of Chinese APT attacks, we name it Operation Clairvoyance . Clairvoyance(千里眼) is an ancient Chinese deity with the ability to see things from thousands of miles away.

Our research shows that media companies need to take more approaches to protect their systems and data. 本次演講中，TeamT5 分析 APT 族群攻擊媒體主要有三大動機 - 獲得重要資訊、達成政治目的、進行資訊作戰。首先，媒體是一個很好的資訊收集站，能得到非常大量且獨特的資訊，如果 APT 族群能潛伏在媒體的資訊系統內，能夠快速獲得大量的資訊。

【The Register 採訪報導】Meet TeamT5, the Taiwanese infosec outfit taking on Beijing and defeating its smears

TeamT5 is deeply involved in the Vietnamese market, and recently joined a seminar which is held by TeamT5’s partners Netpoleon and FPT IS. The seminar aimed to introduce TeamT5 cybersecurity solutions to clients. Seminar participants were IT experts, representatives of large Vietnamese enterprises and government organizations.

The seminar started with Bui Duy Khanh‘s presentation (the representative of FPT IS). He explained the background and development of cybersecurity in Vietnam. Then, John Lu(the representative of TeamT5) analyzed the cybersecurity threat landscape. He pointed out that Vietnam faces two major cybersecurity threats - ransomware attacks, and APT attacks (whose path is directly or indirectly through individual users) targeting enterprises & organizations .

John Lu said that the threat identification and analysis platform ThreatSonar and the threat intelligence platform developed by TeamT5 can effectively assist enterprises & organizations to proactively protect endpoints and defend against cyber threats.

Also, Tran Chi Dung (FPT IS representative) shared the threat assessment and detection services provided by FPT IS in order to assist enterprises to beat cybersecurity defense challenges, such as lack of deployment manpower, information security solutions cannot be fully deployed, and deployment time-consuming .

At the end of the seminar, Bui Duy Khanh(FPT IS representative) received a medal and certification which symbolizes FPT IS partners with TeamT5.

This year, Black Hat Asia is held online and in-person, May 9-12, 2023 in Singapore Time (UTC+8). Yue-Tien Chen and Zih-Cing Liao, cyber threat intelligence researchers from TeamT5, will give a talk on the topic “Operation Clairvoyance: How APT Groups Spy on the Media Industry”.

From TeamT5’s long term research, cyber espionage actors have demonstrated great interest in the media industry. These actors seem to like to see Taiwan's daily activities through the "eyes" of these media companies and journalists. During Taiwan's intense 2022, TeamT5 saw more and more [advanced persistent threat (APT)](https://teamt5.org/en/posts/what-is-advanced-persistent-threat-apt/) groups infiltrate Taiwan's media industry. In our observation, the media has become the first non-government target of those APT groups.

This talk will focus on APT's targeted attack against media companies in Taiwan. We dubbed this series of attacks "Operation Clairvoyance." Because Taiwan has a much more intensive political situation, such as the former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit and the 2022 Local Election, we will dissect more than 20 targeted attack operations TeamT5 has tracked since 2020. Our analysis shows technical links between these targeted attacks and the notorious Chinese APT, including APT23 (aka GouShe), APT41 (aka Winnti, Amoeba), and BlackTech (aka Huapi).

TeamT5 researchers’ presentation will cover these attacks' [tactic, techniques and procedures (TTPs)](https://teamt5.org/en/posts/what-are-tactics-techniques-and-procedures-ttps/). We have seen those APT groups adopt different TTPs aimed at media companies. Some of those backdoor abuse cloud service as their C2.

More importantly, these cases gave us a peek into China's strategic move. We believe that these APT attacks are the preliminary work of the Chinese government. Also, our strategic intelligence indicates several possible scenarios which could lead us to consider the ultimate goal of these APT attacks. 

By sharing this talk at Black Hat Asia, TeamT5 hopes more people and organizations are aware of this topic.

Mysterious balloons hovering ominously over parts of North America are understandably causing some panic. If Taiwan is any indication, these sightings are happening around the globe.

Taiwan has spotted dozens of these sorts of balloons — suspected Chinese military aircraft — in its airspace in recent years, the Financial Times reported. After the US shot down four balloons, a Taiwanese Defense spokesperson said Taipei might do the same if it were concerned enough about them.

What could be more frightening than a big, white spy balloon suspended overhead? The answer, recent moves by Taiwan suggest, is malicious Chinese hackers.

“For an ordinary person, you walk to the convenience store and see it’s been defaced, and then you walk into the high-speed rail station and see defacement messages,” said Silvia Yeh, an analyst at the research firm TeamT5. “Then you go online and see that you can’t access Taiwan’s presidential website. Their first impression would be that China’s capabilities are so strong, and our internal systems have already been compromised.”
